Scribe your thoughts here!
This journal is a pretty worthwhile choice if you're looking for a blank book to fill with your thoughts. The graphic on the front is interesting, even if it's not spectacular. However, it is suitable for just about anything you feel like writing. Poetry, stories, letters, or a diary are examples of what you could make out of these pages. If you've heard the saying, "Life is an open book," then fill up those pages!

Australia: The New New World (Granata 70, Summer (Winter in Australia) 2000)
Published in Paperback by Granta Books (July, 2000)
Authors: Ian Jack, Ben Rice, and David Moore
Average review score:

What Ever Happened to Crocodile Dundee?
There are two Australias: there's the sanitized Australia of myth encompassing Crocodile Dundee, koalas and kangaroos, Nicholas Roeg's WALKABOUT, Peter Weir's early films, and Bruce Chatwin's THE SONGLINES. Then there's the gritty, no-hope, hardscrabble world of the stories in this GRANTA anthology.

Good writing is alive and well Down Under. Some of the pieces were haunting, especially Ben Rice's "Pobby and Dingan," about a child's invisible friends who take on a whole new reality; Paul Toohey's "The Road to Ginger Riley," about the last days of a drunken journalist who wants to "find" Australia before he dies; and Thomas Keneally's "My Father's Australia," about life in a small town before World War I.

The Aborigines are a ghostly presence in this anthology, except for Robyn Davidson's eerie "Marrying Eddie" and Polly Borland's haunting photos and interviews of Aborigine men and women spiralling down into oblivion. There's no COOPER'S CREEK heroism here: You have to find your own way, Mate!

However dark the vision of most of these selections, this volume is a worthy addition to GRANTA's growing library of stories and essays. When you pack your bags to go on vacation, you could do worse than take ANY volume of GRANTA with you. Each one is a window into a different world -- maybe not a pleasant one, but always a fascinating one.

Bargain Bride
Published in Hardcover by Severn House Pub Ltd (January, 1994)
Author: Rowena Summers
Average review score:

Somewhat dated.
A breezy read about Holly Jones, feature writer for Opinion magazine under the name of Emerald Green, and Rawle Paxton, talent agent. Because of his aversion to journalists, Holly pretends to be an aquaintance of his brother's and offers to play nanny to his nephew when Rawle takes him to New York. The deception is discovered and Rawle threatens to ruin Holly's career. Rawle proposes marriage in return for access to high profile people and to quash the interview.

Rawle is very alpha male, so the book is somewhat dated. But it was a pleasant read.

Delightful Child's Book about "Biscuit" the Dog
one of the "Biscuit" series of I CAN READ books with delightful content. please note that this book is not a hardcover book--it is a "board" book (heavy cardboard pages for toddlers). Too baby'ish for primary school children.

Blood Summer
Published in Hardcover by New English Library (June, 1976)
Author: Louise Cooper
Average review score:

Simple yet Effective........
This is probably one of the fantasy writer's first book , being written in 1976 and is a simple yarn dwelling on the story of Marion and her companion Roland who whilst holidaying in Cornwall meet the mysterious and reclusive character of Keith Sharwood. Marion becomes emotionally involved with Keith and throughout the story a macabre chain of events unfolds.....!

Love, murder and a nice splash of horror this little book is a gem .... well I thought so.

The beginning of Cooper's fascination with tall, gaunt and brooding men is evident in the romanticised depiction of the aesthetic-vampirical Keith , similarities to Tarod (yum) unavoidable . Good little pre-cursor to her later Time Master Trilogy Books.

Blue Rabbit: Book and Toy (Mop Tops)
Published in Hardcover by Readers Digest (September, 1900)
Authors: Harry Alexander, Summer Durantz, and Reader's Digest Children's Books
Average review score:

Should you let blue rabbit nibble on you?
This is a very simple children's book: a few inches square, cardboard pages, and a few lines on each page about a blue rabbit who likes to nibble on things. It is roughly as controversial as vanilla ice cream, and less memorable. However, the book's cover is a yarn replica of the rabbit whose story it is. The toy is safe and fun to play with. This book is not a meaningful classic likely to be enjoyed by the adults telling the story, but is a safe bet for young children.

Hilarious
Reminescent of "Mad Magazine" and "Frank and Ernest", this is a very funny collection of cartoons by Dana Summers. If you like that type of cartoons and broad humor, you'll enjoy this collection of cartoons.

Love on the Range
BUFFALO SUMMER by Nadia Nichols (A Harlequin Superromance)

A young woman and "her" five boys spend a summer on a buffalo ranch in BUFFALO SUMMER, a Harlequin Superromance by Nadia Nichols. Caleb McCutcheon is a retired baseball player. He would have been nominated into the Baseball Hall of Fame, if it hadn't been for an injury that cut his career short. Caleb has time to kill, and decides to invest his money (which he has plenty of) in an old ranch that was part of Indian-owned land in the Montana wilderness.

Enter Pony Young Bear. Born and raised on the reservations, she had gone away to college with the financial help of her lawyer brother Steve, and is now a teacher on the reservations. She also takes in troubled children, who have nowhere to go because of varying hardships. This year, Pony has five young boys, all of whom live with her while she teaches them their lessons every day.

When she finds out that she needs extra cash to buy school supplies in the fall, she is desperate to find decent work to help earn that money. Word gets around that Caleb needs help on his new ranch, and Pony has experience with herding Buffalo. She proposes that she and her five boys work the ranch for the entire summer, giving the boys some experience and responsibilities, and at the same time allowing her to earn the money needed for the fall school semester.

Caleb, however, does not know that Pony is a woman. He is in shock when he first sets eyes on her, and does not really believe she can do the job. But Pete, an old friend of Pony and Steve, convinces Caleb that Pony is his "man". She brings along her five boys, and their adventures begin.

As Pony teaches Caleb the ins and outs of raising and herding buffalo, Caleb finds himself falling in love with her. However, after a long talk about culture differences and how Pony feels that her Indian tribe is slowly becoming extinct due to intermarriages, Caleb is crushed. How does one deal with issues of racial pride and intermarriages, when a man is desperately in love with a woman who believes in it?

I always enjoy a romance with an unusual backdrop, and BUFFALO SUMMER fits the description. Nadia Nichols does a good job of describing the beauty of the Montana wilderness, and learning about buffalo was a new one on me! The story was well told and believable. Thumbs up for BUFFALO SUMMER.
